Entry #18

Status: Talking to the ducks to tell them what happened.

On a daily basis, I'll get messages about dUCk.

Questions about its status, about why the website was turned off, where to buy it now, if I am willing to sell my scarves to them, and if dUCk will make a comeback.

I've answered before in my entries, but I'll answer again - I am not in the decision making process anymore. Since Khazanah's selling to a new investor, I've become a minority shareholder only and lost my board seat and control of the company. When Khazanah divestment in my company erupted in Parliament and MACC froze all our accounts for investigation purposes (this is public knowledge – was in every news outlet), it was as good as killing us already – we could not trade anymore. Full stop. I’m sure it wasn’t easy for any related party and the management. The company couldn’t pay anyone, couldn’t pay rent so malls shut us down, couldn’t pay for new products so it just spiralled down... it was like having our hands tied and after a few months, of course any company in that circumstances will die.

It’s unkind. And if this is the reality of the fate of entrepreneurs in Malaysia, we’ve got a lot to think about. But I had to accept the fate - the brand I created with love and care, is something off the past and it’s the most painful seat to be in to watch from the outside.

My best friends were the first to be frustrated. "Where are we going to get our white scarves now?!"

Had I known, I should've just sold white scarves only. Guaranteed customer database: 2 pax.

And then it came pouring…

Gosh, the overwhelming pour of love from the dUCk community we built - Masyaallah! I'm grateful to have crossed paths with you and created something (with my team) that is in your wardrobe. Even if the brand didn't live on, there's a piece that connected us that will forever live on. That's pretty darn special. And the most limited edition of them all. 😂

I had capati (pls notice my healthier choice) with my BIL’s girlfriend last week and she said, “Why don’t you create another scarf brand?”

She’s like the 276th person to ask me that.

And as usual, I’d crack a joke, “Yeah, and I’ll call it Chicken Scarves this time.”

And continued eating my capati because I knew…
